Scenario

NARRATOR: Warm light from the bedside lamp spilled across Mia’s room. Her teeth were brushed, her moon-and-star pajamas were buttoned, and the last book was back on its shelf.

Mia: Teeth, pajamas, books. Bedtime mission complete!

NARRATOR: She turned to climb into bed, then stopped. The foot of the bed was empty.

Ollie: Almost complete, Captain Mia. Aren’t you forgetting something blue?

Mia: My blanket! It was right here.

NARRATOR: A pair of bright eyes opened on the rug. Pip raised his head and flicked one ear.

Pip: I saw something blue sneak under the bed. Very suspicious.

NARRATOR: Mia knelt and found one tassel peeking from beneath the frame. Beyond it, the space under the bed seemed deeper than it did during the day.

Mia: It looks much farther away at night.

NARRATOR: She reached in with her ruler and nudged the tassel. Pip pounced on the tiny movement. One quick pat sent the blanket sliding out of sight.

Pip: I was helping. Probably.

Mia: You helped it disappear.

NARRATOR: Mia sat back with a sigh. Ollie crouched beside her and clicked on his flashlight. A warm circle appeared on the floorboards.

Ollie: Want me to get it?

Mia: No. Just hold the light, like I did when you fixed your model plane.

Ollie: Deal. Your turn to be the fixer.

NARRATOR: Mia followed the beam instead of reaching blindly. The blanket was not far away after all. One corner was pinned beneath a low wooden toy box, with the loose tassel resting just beyond it.

Mia: If I move the box, the blanket will come free. Pip, paws ready?

Pip: Always. Unless I’m napping.

NARRATOR: Ollie held the light steady. Mia slid the ruler under the bed and nudged the toy box aside. The tassel sprang free. Pip trapped it beneath one paw and backed toward Mia, pulling a fold of blue blanket with him.

Pip: Rescue complete. The expert requests chin scratches.

NARRATOR: Mia pulled the blanket free, wrapped its soft blue folds around her shoulders, and gave Pip three excellent scratches beneath his chin.

Mia: Three scratches. That’s expert pay.

Ollie: Ready for lights-out?

NARRATOR: Mia looked beneath the bed once more. The endless dark space was only floorboards, a toy box, and one enormous dust bunny. She smiled and climbed into bed.

Mia: Ready.

NARRATOR: Ollie switched off the lamp. For one quiet moment, the furniture became unfamiliar shapes. Then moonlight touched the chair, the books, and the blanket in Mia’s hands. Pip curled against her feet.

Ollie: Same room?

Mia: Same room. Just quieter.

Pip: Perfect. Now everyone can hear me purr.

NARRATOR: His purr rumbled beneath the blanket like a tiny, friendly engine. Mia smiled and let her eyes close.

Mia: Goodnight, Ollie.

Ollie: Goodnight, Captain Mia.

NARRATOR: Wrapped in blue, with moonlight at the window and Pip’s purr at her feet, Mia drifted peacefully to sleep.
